| Resumo | Statistical models to predict the sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) in the Tropical Atlantic (TA) were constructed using the canonical correlation analysis and the SSTA in the TA and equatorial Pacific (EP) as predictors. Predictors were for each individual month and the predictions have been done with 1 to 6 months lags. Prediction verifications were done against the observed and persisted SST A, through linear correlation analysis for each grid point, area averaged for the north, south and equatorial Atlantic (TNA, TSA and EQA). The SST A predictions for March to June with predictors of the TA and EP were better for the mA than those for the TSA and EQA. For the TSA and EQA were noted the largest correlations for 1 month lag and small contribution of the EP predictors in predicting SST A in these regions The results suggest that ENSO in the Pacific has more influence in the TNA SSTA and the SST variability in the TSA and EQA is related mainly to local atmospheric variations or to seasonal scale ocean dynamics. An aspect explored in this paper refers to put out of phase the EP and TA predictors. The predictions in the TNA are better when the EP predictors lead the TA predictors. The out of phase relation between predictors in the TA and EP was not dealt before and the results show a potential for practical use that should be explored in operational routines. |
